This legal study discusses the copyright of a song uploaded by Cameo Project
entitled “What Makes You Beautiful Parody Jokowi-Basuki,” which has
similarities in instrumentation to the song “What Makes You Beautiful” by the
British band One Direction. This study aims to examine whether the act of changing
One Direction's song titled “What Makes You Beautiful” into a parody song by
Jokowi and Basuki is categorized as a work protected by copyright in Indonesia.
This study uses a normative legal research method, thus reviewing the laws and
regulations. This study is reviewed based on copyright regulations in Indonesia.
The results of this study found that the Cameo Project song titled “What Makes You
Beautiful Parody Jokowi-Basuki” cannot be protected by copyright because it does
not fulfill the elements of originality and creativity as there are no significant
changes to the musical arrangement instrument used. The only change is in the
lyrics of the song “What Makes You Beautiful Parody Jokowi-Basuki” uploaded by
Cameo Project.
