Abstract

TikTok, a popular digital platform for short videos, has seen extensive adoption, particularly
among Gen Z. The rapid consumption, high volume, and fast pace of content associated with
binge-scrolling impose a heavy cognitive load, potentially impairing the brain's ability to process
information and contributing to a decline in information recall over time. This study aims to investigate the cognitive impact of binge-scrolling, particularly on information recall, among Gen Z. This study utilizes a survey questionnaire for quantitative data and interviews for qualitative
insights. The Problematic Series Watching Scale (PSWS) is used to measure binge-scrolling, while
the Everyday Memory Questionnaire (EMQ) is used to assess information recall across five
domains: Speech, Actions, Reading/Writing, Faces/Places, and New Things. The study involved
400 Indonesian Gen Z TikTok users aged 13-28. Spearman's rho correlation test was used for data
analysis. The correlation analysis showed a significant moderate positive correlation between
binge-scrolling and reduced information recall across all EMQ dimensions. The strongest correlation was found with the speech (p = 0.622) dimension, indicating greater difficulty in remembering information through pronunciation or mentioning as binge-scrolling increases. The findings highlight the potential cognitive risks of excessive social media use on the scrolling aspect, particularly for Gen Z, who engage heavily with algorithm-driven platforms. These results emphasize the importance of raising digital awareness and promoting more mindful content consumption.
