Abstract
Yogyakarta City faces cemetery land limitations due to high population density
and restricted urban space. Most public cemeteries have reached maximum capacity,
while policies such as land expansion and overlapping graves still depend on
horizontal burial patterns. This design proposes a multifaith vertical cemetery as an
alternative typology that is more efficient and suitable for the urban context.
The design applies the Sacred Space approach combined with Multifaith
Chaplaincy principles to create an inclusive, symbolically neutral burial environment
capable of accommodating interfaith rituals. The methods include policy and regional
analysis, literature review, typological studies, and site analysis. Design strategies
consist of segmented massing, the use of underground burial spaces, and layered
zoning between public, semi-public, sacred, and operational areas.
The design results indicate that a multifaith vertical cemetery can provide a
solution to land scarcity while creating a humane, contemplative, and contextually
relevant burial environment for diverse urban communities.
