Abstract
In recent years social media has become an important tenet for political
engagement amongst Indonesian Generation Z. With the recent policy changes, such as
budget cuts for several ministries in favour of the Nutritious Food Program or Program
Makan Bergizi (MBG), Indonesians have voiced their opinion on various digital
platforms including Instagram and X. As a result, the #KaburAjaDulu (#JustEscapeFirst)
became a trend which reflected their frustrations and desires to leave the country. This
study reveals that despite being far from home, Indonesian diaspora youth in Germany
engage in political discourse through social media. The use of humour and/or satire helps
lower the barrier for entry to contribute to Indonesian political discourses. To address
these questions, qualitative research approach was applied, specifically through an in-
depth-interview approach, about seven Indonesian diaspora youth that lived in Germany.
The findings contribute to an understanding of the complex ways Indonesian youth in
Germany maintain their political engagement and emotional connection to their homeland through the utilization of social media platforms.
