This study uses empirical research aimed at examining the role of the
Traffic Police in maintaining air quality in Yogyakarta City. The main focus of the
study is to describe the strategic and implementative role played by the Traffic
Police in reducing air pollution that impacts public health and environmental
sustainability. The method used is a qualitative investigation with a normative
legal study approach as well as interviews and document analysis related to local
laws and policies. The results of the study indicate that the Traffic Police play a
role through law enforcement against traffic violations that cause pollution,
outreach and education to the community, and cross-sectoral collaboration in
managing air quality. The main obstacles faced include a lack of public
awareness, limited resources, and the need to strengthen specific regulations for
controlling air pollution from motorized vehicles. This study recommends the
need for capacity building and synergy between related parties to optimize the
role of the Traffic Police in managing air quality in Yogyakarta.Based on DKI
Governor Regulation No. 66 of 2020 concerning Motor Vehicle Exhaust Emission
Testing where the traffic police maintain air quality plays a direct role in the
process of checking or testing vehicle exhaust emissions together with the
Department of Transportation and the Environment, however the role of the
traffic police in the city of Yogyakarta based on DIY Provincial Regulation No. 6
of 2007 concerning Air Pollution Control, the police and traffic police in
maintaining air quality do not have a direct role in the process of checking or
testing emissions, only conducting investigations into violations of this Regional
Regulation, so there is no direct and optimal role from the traffic police in
maintaining air quality in the city of Yogyakarta. In the end, I decided to conduct
research on the role of the traffic police in maintaining air quality in the city of
Yogyakarta using empirical research methods.
