The existence of Syrian refugee in Lebanon is threatened due to the
economic crisis and anti-refugee government regulation. Refugee crisis that occurs
in Lebanon has caused new issue in some European Union (EU) member states
including Cyprus. The purpose of this research is to analyzed the repudiation of
Syrian refugee in Cyprus based on the Geneva Convention of 1951 and the New
York Convention of Protocol 1967. Research method that was used in this research
is doctrinal legal research with qualitative analysis of international law regulations
and Cyprus municipal law. The results of this research show that Cyprus actions in
rejecting and expelling Syrian refugees violate the principle of non-refoulement as
stipulated in Article 33 of the 1951 Geneva Convention. This refusal not only shows
the contradiction of Cyprus international obligations, but also shows the
incompatibility between Cyprus municipal law and the applicable international
legal instruments related to the protection of refugees. Therefore, Cyprus should
evaluate its migration policy and ensure protection for refugees in accordance
with the Geneva Convention of 1951 and the New York Protocol of 1967.
