Abstract

This research investigates Indonesia’s dependence on imported fertilizers and how disruptions
in global supply particularly from major exporters like China, Russia, and Canada have
affected the country's fertilizer trade, prices, agricultural productivity, and food security. The
study uses a qualitative approach, drawing on secondary data such as trade and pricing
statistics, policy documents, and expert commentary to assess the impacts of global fertilizer
market disruptions on Indonesia. A global decline in fertilizer availability driven by
geopolitical tensions, export restrictions, and rising energy costs has led to sharp increases in
domestic fertilizer prices and constrained supply. These challenges forced farmers, especially
smallholders, to reduce fertilizer usage, shift to cheaper alternatives, and adopt coping
strategies that often resulted in lower yields and incomes. The findings highlight the
vulnerability of rural livelihoods and national food security. Policy recommendations include
diversifying import sources, strengthening domestic production, reforming subsidy systems,
and promoting sustainable alternatives to enhance resilience and reduce long-term dependency on global supply chains.
