Abstract
Urban space essentially created by engagement of unique social capital and spatial capital.
Therefore, development of urban space cannot only based on objective-positivistic approach without
understanding of subjective-phenomenology reality, which experienced by local people. Malioboro
as unique urban space in Yogyakarta, basically created by engagement of urban physical space and
social - economy - cultural values of local people. It develops historically and builds unique
character and image of Malioboro until now. Angkringan (food seller or food trader) as actors in
Malioboro have grown rapidly and have potential to develop or destruct quality of urban life.
Understanding on them urgently needed and useful to raise and maintain the quality of urban life.
This research based on phenomenology paradigm and use naturalistic - qualitative method. Grand
tour used to understand overall situation and mini tour used to understand urban space character in
focused observation for collecting unique data and understand detail relationship between them.
Iterative observation conducted to understand more data especially to find more stable phenomena.
Analysis and record data always done in the fieldwork and produce or improve understanding of the
phenomena.
The result of this research concluded that the existence of food sellers or food traders connected
systematically with Malioboro urban space through its activities and built the character of Malioboro
urban space. In more details, urban space character constituted by social engagement of inhabitants,
patterns of space occupation by food sellers and its physical- spatial engagement. Social engagement
permanently and regularly of food sellers with other inhabitants occurred in Malioboro, then
strengthened with effort for self-stabilization through strategy and process for occupation of space. In
other word, privatization of urban space is a key factor in the existence of food sellers or food traders
in Malioboro, and connected systematically and spatially with their housing (rented or contracted
house, rent-sharing house, and home base for living with friends in a group of food sellers).
