Some efforts that have been done by the authority of Turkey to fight against a movement of
Fethullah Gullen effected Indonesian interests. The movement of Fethullah Gullen has been
suspected as a mastermind of the failed military coup that happened in Turkey in 2016. Because of
those effort, there were four Indonesian nationals that have been catched and detained by the
authority of Turkey. The catching based on a suspicion of their involvement in the said movement.
Remembering article 3 of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations that one of the
functions of diplomatic mission namely to protect in the receiving State the interests of sending
State and of its nationals, then Indonesian Diplomatic Agent in Turkey should make efforts to
protect the said Indonesian nationals. There were many efforts that have been done by Indonesian
Diplomatic Agent such as demanding consular access, appointing lawyers to accompany their
legal process, approaching the authority of Turkey, providing facilities to live temporally and
others. As a result of those efforts, three of the said Indonesian nationals have been released by the
authority of Turkey, nonetheless Indonesian Diplomatic Agent still efforts to free the only one
Indonesian national that is detained and facing the legal process in Turkey.
